Sexism in academia wastes public funding and is bad for science

In their article for Nature Reviews Materials, Sexism in academia is bad for science and a waste of public funding, Nicole Boivin, Susanne Täuber, Ulrike Beisiegel, Ursula Keller, and Janet Hering write that higher education and research institutions "are critical to the well-being and success of societies, meaning their financial support is strongly in the public interest. At the same time, value-for-money principles demand that such investment delivers. Unfortunately, these principles are currently violated by one of the biggest sources of public funding inefficiency: sexism."

Using cross-European-Union data, the article describes stages where women leave the fields of science and the subsequest compounding economic losses.

A Family Affair

It’s not atypical for children to follow in the footsteps of their parents or for siblings to have similar career paths. During our research for various other blog posts, the editors of AASWomen were surprised to see so many family connections in the field of Astronomy and extending to planetary science and physics. We shouldn’t have been – the mother-daughter planet hunters Natalie and Natasha Batalha have already caught the attention of various news outlets. We tweeted a request for more family connections in these fields and were inundated with examples, which we list here in roughly chronological history. Do you know of more? If so, add them to the Comments section.

The earliest example of a female science lineage may be the mother-daughter-granddaughter line of women who lived c. 2334 BCE. According to some reports, Enheduanna (mother) was a princess, priestess, astronomer, and the world’s first known author. She lived in Ur in ancient Sumer. Two thousand years later in Alexandria, Egypt, the philosopher/astronomer Hypatia (~370-416CE) worked with her father, Theon. She taught philosophy at the Great Library in Alexandria, produced commentary on the works of her father, and also wrote her own book on astronomy. Hypatia invented the device for measuring the specific gravity of a liquid.

Fast-forwarding several hundred years, we have the Herschelsperhaps the most well-documented family to share a passion for astronomy. Caroline (1750-1848) steadfastly assisted her brother William (1738-1822) while he painstakingly mapped the night sky. William discovered the planet Uranus. Caroline wrote down coordinates and other observations for William bringing necessary structure to his observations. Caroline became recognized for discovering several comets, and eventually she was awarded a gold medal for her lifetime of work. She was hired by the British government to finish William’s work and thus became the first ‘civil servant’ who was a woman. William’s son, John Herschel, was also an astronomer. He continued the star cataloging done by the Herschels and introduced the concept of studying individual stars for their properties.

In the pre-telescope era, Tycho and Sophie Brahe (brother and sister) made their own contributions to the advancement of science. Many of us are familiar with the observations of Tycho (1548-1601), which allowed Johannes Kepler (astronomer) to develop the laws of orbital motion. Sophie, a physician, helped Tycho with his observations.

Maria Magaretha Kirch (1670-1720) was the spouse of Gottfried Kirch (1639-1710).  He founded the Berlin Observatory in 1700 and was the first member in the Prussian academy (Leibniz was the second). Margaretha was an accomplished astronomer and a recipient of the gold medal of the Prussian Royal Academy for discovering a comet. Of her 14 children her daughters, Christine (1696-1782) and Magharetha (1703-1744), and her son, Christfried (1694-1740), were all astronomers and continued the work of their parents. After Christfried’s death, Christine even came on the payroll of the academy (a novum at that time) with a considerable salary. 

In more contemporary times, we have a slew of relatives who work or worked together in the same field or parents who (intentionally or not) influenced their children to pursue careers in science:

Mother/daughter or son
  • Paris Pişmiş (1911-1999) and daughter Elsa Recillas are both astronomers. Her son, Sevín Recillas Pishmish, became a mathematician. Recillas married astronomer Carlos Cruz-González, and their daughter Irene Cruz-González also became an astronomer.
  • Carol J.A. Rieke (1908-1999) and son George Rieke.
  • mother Vera Rubin (1928-2016) and daughter Judy Young (1952-2014) were both astronomers. Son Karl Rubin (1956- ) is a mathematician.   
  • mother Yolanda Gómez (1962-2012) and son Vicente Rodriguez-Gomez are both astronomers.
  • Ulyana Safronova is a physicist who does work in laboratory astrophysics; she has at least two daughters also doing physics: Alla and Marianna
  • Silvia Torres Peimbert served as President of the International Astronomical Union. Her husband, Manuel Peimbert, and son Antonio Peimbert, are both astronomers.

Father/daughter or son
  • Georg Christoph Eimmart was an avid amateur astronomer (1638-1705), and his daughter Maria Calara Eimmart (1676–1707) produced some of the most striking astronomical art since the invention of the telescope
  • Norman Pogson (1821-1891) discovered several minor planets and made observations on comets and daughter Isis Pogson (1852-1945), who was one of the first women to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society
  • Vernon Barger (Physics) and Amy Barger (astronomy)
  • Jeff Hester and Janice Hester 
  • Jerry Ostriker and Eve Ostriker
  • Dan Gesari and Suvi Gezari

Women of Arecibo: Dr. Nipuni Palliyaguru

I am a radio astronomer and postdoctoral researcher at Texas Tech University and a former postdoctoral researcher
at the Arecibo Observatory. This is a personal account of my experiences. The views expressed in this article are my 
own and do not reflect those of an organization.

The first time I learned to use a radio telescope was with Arecibo. It was in January 2011, when one 
of my graduate school supervisors, Dr. Dan Stinebring took me and three undergraduate students to
Puerto Rico to observe the scintillation of apulsar.  Throughout the night, I watched the pulses of
light from the pulsar appear in real-time on an oscilloscope. Since that first night and throughout my 
graduate school career, I visited Arecibo many times for various observation trips and scientific 
meetings. From summer school for students and frequent visits from scientists from across the 
globe, the observatory maintained a rich and vibrant academic culture. 

I always wanted to work at an observatory, so, I was 
thrilled when I was offered position as a postdoctoral 
scientist at Arecibo in the fall of 2017. Secretly, I 
really wanted  to be like Ellie Harroway in the movie 
“Contact” (who’s real-life protagonist, Jill Tarter, I later had the privilege of meeting at Arecibo). Living and 
working in a predominantly Spanish speaking 
community was a new experience after years of 
working in the mainland US. I experienced a way of 
doing  science in a way that was intertwined with 
culture. There was an overall familial atmosphere within the observatory. Remarkably, over seventy percent 
of the scientific staff was female, and a large majority were women of  color, just like me. Outside, Arecibo
had instilled a sense of pride in the people of Puerto 
Rico. However, it didn’t take too long for me to 
realize that things  had drastically changed from the thriving environment I had witnessed during graduate school trips. Hurricane Maria had just hit, leaving the island with no power and water. The observatory 
was also affected by some damages to the dish, reducing its efficiency significantly. The future of Arecibo was uncertain. The staff was tired of dealing with the disheartening recommendations of divesting the telescope and anxiously awaited the impending management change. Amidst this chaos, following the hurricane, the Arecibo staff worked tirelessly to get the telescope up and running. 

Leading from the middle

In the late spring of 2018, Arecibo underwent a drastic change in management that particularly 
affected the  junior scientists at the observatory. Many of the senior staff left, crippling daily 
operations and leaving the postdocs to take on many extra observatory-level responsibilities. For 
a few months, Arecibo  was defunct academically. There were no workshops, no summer schools, 
and interaction with the rest of the world was minimal. We rarely had scientists visit for observations 
or colloquia. It was hard to perform daily duties like analyzing data and writing papers because of
the uncertainty looming over us. 

In February 2019, I, along with several other postdocs, organized an “Arecibo Futures” meeting 
to bring the management, scientists, engineers, and the local community together to talk about 
a science blueprint for the observatory spanning the next decade. The Astronomy and Astrophysics
Decadal Survey, which funding agencies use to identify transformative science and set funding 
priorities for theupcoming decade, was also happening at this time. For the survey, we submitted 
several white papers highlighting the importance of Arecibo and the role of ground-based facilities 
in terms of training the next generation of astronomers, with the hope of increasing the funding 
profile of the observatory and attracting new funders.


We also identified the need to attract new users for 
the observatory and restarted the joint Arecibo-
Green Bank single dish summer schools for 
students. About 15 undergraduate students 
attended the school to learn about how to observe 
with Arecibo. Throughout this time there were
 moments of not being taken seriously and 
undermining efforts which women of color, I am 
sure, are quite accustomed to. However, I was 
fortunate to get the support of my Ph.D. supervisor, 
Dr. Maura McLaughlin, and other well-wishers for 
my research and outreach activities and other 
ventures.

 
 
 
 
Students of Puerto Rico
 
During this time, I was thinking of ways to involve undergraduate students on the island in active 
research at the observatory since I was already working closely with the University of Puerto Rico 
(UPR) Mayaguez campus on various projects. Undergraduate students from institutions on the 
island often visited the observatory for colloquia and special seminars and there was a lot of 
interestto get actively involved, but there wasn’t a direct throughline to getting involved in 
research at Arecibo. 
In May 2019, the Arecibo receiver engineer Felix
Fernandez and I visited the UPR Mayaguez campus to
talk to students about potential research projects. 
Having laid the groundwork for potential 
undergraduate research, I worked closely with 
student groups to organize a data reduction and
science communication workshop at UPR. At 
the workshop, students learned to process Arecibo
 pulsar data. The goal of the science communications workshop was to build an island-wide network of 
trained ambassadors educating various audiences 
about astrophysical concepts.
It was heartening to see the efforts by students to 
make these workshops a success and the plans they 
made for future involvement.
 
 
 
 
Final thoughts 

At the end of summer in 2019, I left Puerto Rico for a position in the mainland U.S. because I 
wanted to focus more on my research. However, for Arecibo, the funding challenges remained. 
It was devastating to watch the collapse almost two years later. Like many others in the 
astronomy community, I mourned the loss with extreme sadness. Nonetheless, something that 
continued to amaze me is the commitment and resilience of the staff throughout those 
challenging times.
 
As for me personally, I carry the burden of being a woman of color in academia. Arecibo was 
one of the first places that challenged me to step out of my academic research comfort zone 
and get a taste of what doing research in a resource-poor environment is like. In other words, 
I owe my recent growth as a professional to Arecibo.  Even though there were many challenges, 
I am glad that at Arecibo, I found a group of supportive colleagues and the opportunity to grow
as a scientist and a community advocate.

I strongly believe that scientific research should be accessible to all, especially to those who 
have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Arecibo was a symbol of pride for 
Puerto Ricans and was a source of inspiration for students. With proper resources and a vision, 
it could have pioneered untapped scientific talent in Puerto Rico. Considering Arecibo’s role in 
education and outreach, providing opportunities for minority scientists, and cultural exposures 
for the next generation of scientists in the mainland U.S and Puerto Rico, the loss of the 
telescope is unquantifiable. Therefore, it is crucial that rebuilding plans are successful. I hope 
that Arecibo will soon be on its feet again to continue its invaluable service to both astronomers 
and the citizens of Puerto Rico.

Dr. Nipuni Palliyaguru is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics and Astronomy 
at Texas Tech University. Before joining Texas Tech, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at 
the Arecibo Observatory and Texas Tech University.  She received her Ph.D. from West Virginia 
University where she was supervised by Prof. Maura McLaughlin. Dr. Palliyaguru’s research 
focuses on transient events in the radio sky such as supernovae, pulsars, and Fast Radio Bursts.

Crosspost: Black women’s experiences in STEM inspire an annual workshop

When LaNell Williams arrived at Harvard University in 2017 to begin a graduate program in physics, several of her peers told her she had been admitted only because she was a Black woman—her 3.9 GPA, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and two coauthored scientific papers notwithstanding. During an open house for the incoming class, she asked her fellow students why they thought no other underrepresented racial minority woman had been admitted to the physics department that year. “We [women of color] hear many different things in those conversations, one of them being that we’re not interested in physics, which isn’t true,” Williams says. “Or that some of us don’t have the pedigree, which is also not true. And then the last thing is that we don’t apply—and in some cases that is true.”

In Williams’s experience, however, many women of color had both the grades and the aptitude for physics, but they were discouraged from applying to graduate programs by their professors, advisers, and classmates. “I wanted to prove them wrong,” she says of her peers at Harvard. She was determined to show just how many talented candidates there really are. “I wanted to say to those women that you are as good as, if not better than, some of the people who might be applying to graduate school,” Williams explains.

In 2019 Williams founded the Women+ of Color (WOC+) Project, an annual three-day workshop that encourages women and gender-nonconforming people of color to pursue advanced STEM degrees and provides resources on how to apply for and succeed in graduate school. The WOC+ Project has gone on to win the Materials Today Agent of Change Award. Now, Williams, graduate students L. Miché Aaron and Ayanna Jones, and several other graduate student volunteers are working to expand the workshop’s scope to support women of color throughout their academic careers.

Women of Arecibo: Dr. Allison Smith

This post marks the launch of Women of Arecibo, a new blog series highlighting the achievements and experiences of women who built their careers around the 305-meter telescope at Arecibo Observatory. In this entry, Allison Smith details the legacy of the observatory, what the fall of the 305-m telescope meant to her, and what comes next.

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Arecibo Observatory, and I study the diffuse interstellar medium of our galaxy with the goal of investigating the atomic to molecular transition of gas as well as how our galaxy accretes gas for star formation. I’m thrilled to have a chance to share with the AASWomen community my story and my experience at the observatory. Please note that I’m sharing my personal perspective only (not my employers), but that the impacts of the observatory and the effects of the loss of the 305-m telescope are far reaching. The Name Game


Ms., Mrs., Mr., Doctor, Professor... what do your students call you?

As we start the new school year and I teach a new crop of first-year students at a liberal arts (LA) college, I'm again faced with a big decision - how should I have my students address me?  I'm proud of the work I did in graduate school and my position at my college. We all worked hard to earn our PhDs - blood, sweat, tears, sacrifices...you know the story. Surely, asking the students to call me "Dr." or "Professor" is appropriate, right[1]?  

I talked about this last week with a colleague of mine at a NASA agency. He spent his undergraduate years at a small liberal arts college and remembered that he "avoided the issue" entirely by never using any title. Once he got into the major, and certainly in graduate school, he called his professors by their first names. I spent my undergraduate years at a large research university (R1) - it never occurred to me (or my friends) to address my professors by their first names (unless we were outside of class, of course).  I distinctly remember my undergraduate advisor finally telling me one day, "You can call me Chris".  Once I started graduate school, I used first names more often, but not always.

I ponder the "title" issue because I've learned that several of my colleagues outside of the sciences like to "break down the walls" between professor and student and thus invite students to call them by their first names.  Results from an informal poll at my college show that across all divisions, less than half of the faculty who responded prefer to be called “Dr.” or “Professor”.  The rest use first names, nicknames or have no preference.  I'm not sure how I feel about this.  I like to think that undergraduate students should learn that the road to the PhD, ending with "Dr.", comes after many years of hard work and research experience.  Welcome to college.  Importantly, according to this poll, more scientists than non-scientists prefer to be called “Dr.” or “Professor”, and I think this tells us something about the nature of the disciplines.

To test this idea further, I also sent the survey out to members of the yahoo.com group, astrolrner, which is a discussion group for those interested in improving college-level astronomy teaching and learning.  Since the members teach at all types of colleges, I had them select what type of college (community college, undergraduate-only college, or college/university with Masters and PhD degrees). This time, I also had them tell me if they were male or female.  The results were not surprising.  According to the poll results, the majority of faculty at four-year institutions and at institutions granting Masters and PhD degrees prefer to be called “Dr.” or “Professor”.  Of interest, I believe, to the readers here, is that only 1/14 of female faculty at these institutions prefers that students use her first name or nickname or has no preference compared to 7/18 of male faculty.  Hmm. I expected this. Did you?

One person (male) at a four-year college responded, “Students SHOULD be referring to us by title - Prof. or Dr. Many don't... I've had freshmen call me by my first name without having been instructed to do so. Some faculty want to be 'friends' with students, and use first names. I think that is a great disservice, as students don't get the social skills they'll need in the professional business world.”   Do you agree?

What about the media?  When you are interviewed, does the reporter call you (or write about you as) "Dr." or "Mrs." or "Mr."? (BTW, did you read that, according to one study, fewer women than men are quoted/interviewed by news outlets?)  I'm always surprised when I read an article and I see scientists often (but not always) referred to as "Mr." or "Mrs." or even “Ms.”, even in prestigious national newspapers. Physics Today even accepted a letter or two about this issue.

I don’t have any answers – just data! – so I leave you with a lot of questions. Please feel free to leave comments because I think there are lots of subtleties to be explored.  Is using a title a cultural thing? Is it an LA-vs.-R1-vs.-other-type-of-school thing?  Is it regional?  As suggested by one respondent, does age, i.e, social standards of generations or the age difference between students and instructors, have anything to do with this?  

Could it be that part of the STEM issue – so few students majoring and pursuing careers in STEM fields – has something to do with titles? Or what gender of faculty uses them?  Are science courses perceived as "cold" and non-science courses as "warm and fuzzy", partly as a result of the hierarchical nature of science?  What’s your opinion?
