Yesterday much of Europe enjoyed a solar eclipse. The path of totality swept across Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, along with a tiny corner of Portugal. For those not in the path, the partial solar eclipse was still an exciting event.

The Senate Appropriations Committee released bill text of a bipartisan continuing resolution (CR), a stopgap funding measure that would fund the government from 1 October to 11 December 2026. Notably, the bill includes language that would prohibit the Office of Management and Budget proposed rule from being finalized during the CR, or from being implemented if it is already finalized before the CR goes into effect.

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectures Program. Two parallel opportunities are available: one for prospective Shapley Lecturers and another for organizations to host astronomers in 2027. Applications are due 18 September 2026.

While the world waits and wonders how AI will impact all jobs, some studies indicate more women are leaving the computer science field. Half of women in the tech field leave by the age of 35, according to Women Hack. An eye-popping 56% leaving tech between 10 and 20 years into their careers, according to Women in Tech.

The truth is hard to swallow: The gender gap in scientific publishing is real. Compared with men, women publish fewer papers, usually in lower-impact journals, experience longer peer-review times, and are less often credited with co-authorship on studies where they make contributions—the senior authors who decide on who merits co-authorship see the women as simply “doing their job” while men in similar roles are viewed as legitimate co-authors.
