The Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize honors exceptionally innovative and creative research contributions in astronomy or astrophysics. Awarded biennially, it is open to candidates of any nationality, career stage, or subfield within the astronomical sciences.

The AAS Education & Professional Development (EPD) Mini-Grant Program funds workshops that strengthen the education practices of AAS members. The AAS Education Committee is now accepting Letters of Intent for the 2027 funding cycle. Please submit your Letter of Intent by 11:59 pm ET on Friday, 24 April 2026:

This week, as Artemis II circled the Moon and took humans farther from Earth than ever before, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released its 2027 budget. That budget looks eerily similar to the budget released in 2025 that sought to gut support for NASA as well as funding for other agencies involved in science and research. This proposed budget, if passed, would cut $5.6 billion from NASA science, despite overwhelming support for NASA from Congress.

The SETI Institute article highlights Women With Impact, an art–science project by Bettina Forget that draws attention to the historical underrepresentation of women in lunar naming, once reflected in the fact that only 27 lunar craters were named after women

Sofya Kovalevskaya (1850–1891) was the first woman to earn a modern doctorate in mathematics (1874), and the first woman in Northern Europe to hold a full professorship (University of Stockholm, 1889). She made significant contributions to mathematical analysis, partial differential equations, and mechanics, including the Cauchy–Kovalevskaya theorem.
