NSF NOIRLab is pleased to announce that registration and abstract submission are now open for the “Empowering Science in the Data-Rich Era of Astronomy” conference, which will take place from 20–24 April 2026 in Tucson, AZ. The astronomical community has entered an era of rapidly evolving datasets of unprecedented volume and complexity, requiring cutting-edge analysis resources and tools, including AI and machine learning. NSF NOIRLab is positioning itself to better support the community in this era of data and software-driven growth. The discussion at this meeting will inform the planning process for evolving the data, software and service products across NOIRLab.

How can research institutions welcome scientists who come out as LGBTQ+? And what does being ‘out’ in an academic context mean? In 1997, Shannon Bros came out as a transgender woman to students and colleagues. “When I transitioned, everything stopped,” says Bros of her research career. “I had a huge friend base by that time. I was confident, you know, what I was doing. Everything collapsed overnight.”

In some ways, she and her husband were ahead of the curve. Months before Donald Trump was elected U.S. president for a second time, the chemistry postdoc began to submit applications for faculty jobs in Europe. “We were noticing the momentum in Florida,” she says of the overhaul of public universities that Republican Governor Ron DeSantis had implemented in her home state. The pair was also “very concerned” about Project 2025, the blueprint of presidential priorities laid out by a conservative think tank. “That’s when we thought, maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to look outside the U.S.”
