Culturally Inclusive Planetary Engagement
September 24 – 26, 2024, Boys & Girls Club of Burbank (CA) and Greater East Valley
led by NASA’s Planetary ReaCH project
Planetary science and astrobiology subject matter experts are invited to apply to attend the Culturally Inclusive Planetary Engagement professionaldevelopment workshop at the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley, September 24 – 26, 2024 in Burbank, CA. During the three-day workshop, participants engage with local informal (out-of-school time) educators to discuss and model effective strategies for engaging Black and Latinx communities in planetary science. In addition, participants conduct hands-on activitiesand co-create a public engagement in collaboration with a local youth-serving organization. The event takes place on the third day of the workshop and allows participants the opportunity to practice engagement strategies discussed in the workshop.
During the workshop, participants team-up to: • Explore the importance of building equitable partnerships with organizations, subject matter experts, and informal educators serving Black and Latinx audiences • Learn evidence-based culturally relevant authentic approaches to nurture connections with Black and Latinx individuals • Practice planetary science engagement approaches through a culturally inclusive lens
The deadline to apply is 5:00 P.M. Central, August 31, 2024. Space is limited to 10 subject matter experts. Stipends are available for participants able to accept them. Recent publications by Vatican Observatory Adjunct Scholar Dr. Ileana Chinnici on Italian contributions to planetary astronomy and on the correspondence between Fr. Angelo Secchi, S.J. and Fr. Francesco Denza. Adjunct Scholars have full access to the Observatory and its facilities, including an apartment where researchers can stay for extended periods. Dr. Ileana Chinnici was the first woman to be appointed an Adjunct Scholar, and thus the first astronomer at the Observatory who was a woman.

The goal is to bring together astrophysicists, cultural astronomers, Indigenous knowledge holders, historians and statisticians to engage with the latest research on women in astronomy, gendered Indigenous constellations, gendered Indigenous sky knowledge and the gender dimensions of who has access to astronomy/indigenous astronomy. There is pressure to have accurate data on the number of women and members of underrepresented groups to build our understanding of variations across nations, pressure to engage with Indigenous knowledge holders to learn and record their sky knowledge before such knowledge is lost, and pressure to identify interventions, strategies and policies that have been successful that may be modified for broader use. The COVID Pandemic has impacted all of these, thus we think that COVID needs to be highlighted, too.

Emily Calandrelli, an MIT engineer, science communicator, host, and Emmy-nominated TV producer, is heading to space.
On July 16, Calandrelli took to social media to announce that she will be launching aboard a Blue Origin craft, a feat that will make her one of the first 100 women in space.

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan invites juniors, seniors, recently graduated students, and Master’s students interested in graduate school to attend a preview event to explore our PhD program. We welcome applications from students who will contribute to our department's mission of promoting diversity and inclusion in the field of Astronomy and Astrophysics - Astronomy is for Everyone. This event is a collaboration with the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) and Rackham Graduate School.
