2. Meeting: Multi-Dimensional Characterization of Distant Worlds
From: Emily Rauscher [erausche_at_umich.edu]

We are excited to announce “Multi-dimensional characterization of distant worlds: spectral retrieval and spatial mapping”, a meeting to be held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from October 15-19, 2018. This meeting is generously supported by the Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics.

There is no registration fee and we will provide hotel lodging, but participation is limited. We especially encourage applications from junior scientists, since our goal for the workshop is to get science done! We also hope to have participation from a wide group of scientists, but we need a wide group to apply in order to make that happen. Please help us encourage anyone who works on relevant science to apply.

Important dates
July 20: deadline for application
Aug 1: participant selections will be made by this date
Oct 15: meeting begins”

3. Why Women Need Mid-Career Mentors
From: JoEllen McBride [joellen.mcbride_at_gmail.com]

By Julia Carpenter

"You probably have a mental picture of the usual mentor-mentee relationship: a college-aged ingenue sitting at lunch with an industry veteran.

But for some women, that picture isn't accurate. For an older woman looking for mentorship through a career transition, creative stagnation or the second half of her career, there are increasingly few places to turn: there's no alumni network or old boys' club to step in and help."

4. Institute Archives spotlights pioneering women at MIT
From: JoEllen McBride [joellen.mcbride_at_gmail.com]

One of the women featured, Sheila Widnall, Ph.D, is a professor of astronautics. Also, this just seems like a cool initiative!

"A new MIT Libraries initiative aims to highlight MIT’s women faculty by acquiring, preserving, and making accessible their personal archives. The Institute Archives and Special Collections (IASC) launched the project last year with the generous support of Barbara Ostrom ’78 and Shirley Sontheimer."

5. Why Science Breeds a Culture of Sexism
From: JoEllen McBride [joellen.mcbride_at_gmail.com]

By David Batty and Nicola Davis

"Lois, a medical researcher, endured more than five years of sexual harassment during her postgraduate study at a leading UK university. It started when she worked on a project between her MSc and PhD. The professor overseeing the research bombarded her and the other women in the group of junior researchers with crude and humiliating sexual comments."

6.  Podcasting Is About to Become a Lot Less White and Male
From: Nicolle Zellner [nzellner_at_albion.edu]

In 2016, just 8% of podcasts had at least one host who was a woman of color. And Spotify took notice. Out of 18,000 applications, three women of color were recently chosen to receive $10,000 in support of their podcasts, which cover science, genetics, and women’s careers.

7. 5 Inspiring Young Women Who Are Leading the Way in STEM
From: JoEllen McBride [joellen.mcbride_at_gmail.com]

By RYOT Studio

"For centuries, the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) have been dominated by men. And while women today only hold 24 percent of jobs in these areas, a new generation has made it their mission to close the gender gap by offering new ways for girls to get involved in STEM.

From learn-to-code apps to science summer camps, these initiatives are creating opportunities that help give girls the confidence and support they need to pursue careers in these male-dominated fields. We partnered with Acer to highlight some of the young women who are inspiring girls and helping lead the way for women in STEM."
