1. Yet Another Potential Roadblock for Women's Career Advancement

On October 9th an article was released in Science Daily reporting that a study published in "Sex Roles" entitled "Dads are often having fun while moms work around the house." As noted in the summary, "For the first time, researchers have evidence of exactly what dads are doing while moms are taking care of housework or tending to their child. The results will be disappointing for those who expected more gender equity in modern society."

2. AAS Code of Ethics Committee

The AAS has recently implemented a new Code of Ethics as well as a Code of Ethics Committee that will promote a high level of ethical conduct, will oversee the investigation of complaints concerning possible unethical conduct, and will recommend sanctions when a violation of the Code has been confirmed.

3. Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Applications Now Being Accepted

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship is awarded annually to 35 women pursuing PhD degrees in any aerospace-related science or aerospace-related engineering program anywhere in the world. The Fellowship amount is US$10,000, and the due date is November 15.

4. Forces of nature: great women who changed science

“Women have been historically under-represented in physics; progress is happening, but there is much work to be done. Systemic and cultural barriers still exist. Part of making positive change includes celebrating the contributions women have made to science, especially those women overlooked in their time. That’s why Perimeter Institute has created the “Forces of Nature” poster series.”

5. Study finds bias against female candidates who have partners

“The search committee chair said of a job candidate, “She seems to have the highest potential based on limited information.”
The other search committee members agreed -- with regard to her qualifications. But other issues quickly came up. One committee member said, “Some people think it’s unlikely she’d come because of her boyfriend. He’s a [names the boyfriend’s occupation], and [the city where her other offer is] is really the best for that.””
