1. Equal Pay Day 2018
From: Angela Speck via womeninastronomy.blogspot.com

April 10th 2018 is “Equal Pay Day”. It is the day in 2018 that women have to work until to earn the same as men did in 2017. In fact, this isn’t even a true statement. For women of color Equal Pay day is later in the year... In 2016, white women earned 77 cents on the dollar compared to what men earned; African American women earned 64 cents on the dollar and Hispanic women only earned 56 cents on the dollar. Within academia in the US, women earn 80 cents on the dollar.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) International Top Young Fellowship (ITYF) invites the world’s top-level young researchers to work at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS)/JAXA for 3 years. In addition to producing outstanding academic achievements in their areas of specialization, ITYF fellows are expected to contribute to creating new academic trends in collaboration with researchers inside and/or outside ISAS. An excellent remuneration package is offered, including research budget (including travel expense) so that the fellow can extend their international profile, as well as developing collaborations within Japan.

The application deadline:17:00PM (JST)/ 8:00AM (UTC), May 31, 2018

3. The Habits of Light: A Celebration of Pioneering Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt…
From: John Mather [johncm12_at_gmail.com]

“At the mathematical center of Hubble’s Law were the calculations of Henrietta Swan Leavitt (July 4, 1868–December 12, 1921) — one of the unheralded women astronomers, known as “the Harvard Computers,” who shaped our understanding of the universe long before they could vote. Leavitt’s particular work at the Harvard College Observatory was deemed so valuable that she was paid 20% more than the standard salary of the other computers: 25 cents per hour.”

5. Science’s Invisible Women
From: John Mather [johncm12_at_gmail.com]

Here's a story from The New York Times that I thought you'd find interesting:

Two new books, Patricia Fara’s “A Lab of One’s Own” and Claire L. Evans’s “Broad Band,” put women back into the history of science.

6. For SHE’s a Jolly Good Fellow?
From: Nicolle Zellner [nzellner_at_albion.edu]

In a study of APS Fellowships, Kerstin Nordstrom (Mount Holyoke College) and her colleagues found that APS Units have awarded proportionally fewer Fellowships to women. In fact, over the past three years, 42 out of 97 units had zero women selected. In this article, the authors propose actions that can be taken to work towards a less biased process for groups underrepresented in physics.

7. Not smart enough? Men overestimate intelligence in science class
From: Nicolle Zellner [nzellner_at_albion.edu]

In a recent study of college biology students, Katelyn Cooper (Arizona State University) and her colleagues found that male students perceive themselves and other males to be smarter, even when their class GPAs say otherwise. The "men thought they'd be smarter than 61 percent of their colleagues. Women put the number closer to 33 percent."
