1. Response to The Legacy of Paris Pismis
From: Lori Allen [lallen_at_noao.edu]

[The July 23, 2010 AASWomen newsletter highlights the legacy of Paris Pismis, the mother of Mexican formal astronomy.]

Thanks for the notice about Paris Pismis.  I had the honor of meeting her in the early to mid 90's,  when, as a graduate student I visited INAOE and gave a talk.  I have a vivid memory of her from an otherwise hazy few days.  As it turned out, the Mexican government and UMASS signed the LMT agreement the day before my talk, and that night there was a blowout party at INAOE with all in attendance, including Paris.  The next day at noon I gave a talk to an extremely quiet, severely hungover group of people.  But Paris was sitting front and center, and asked me the most insightful questions.  It made my day.

A ground-breaking study has found that mothers can go back to work months after the birth of their child without the baby's wellbeing suffering as a result. To read about this new find, please see:

4. Free APS Online Journals
From: WIPHYS, August 3, 2010

APS announces a new public access initiative that will give readers and researchers in public libraries in the United States full use of all online APS journals, from the most recent articles back to the first issue in 1893, a collection including over 400,000 scientific research papers.  APS will provide this access at no cost to participating public libraries, as a contribution to public engagement with the ongoing development of scientific understanding.

Librarians can obtain access by accepting a simple online site license and providing valid IP addresses of public-use computers in their libraries

http://librarians.aps.org/account/public_access_new

The license requires that public library users must be in the library when they read the APS journals or download articles.

5. Astronomy Web Developer
From: Aaron Price [aaronp_at_aavso.org]

The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) is looking for a web developer with PHP and MySQL expertise. The web developer will be responsible for management of the AAVSO web presence, maintaining and developing new web-based applications and the management of a collection of MySQL-based back end databases. Required skills include advanced knowledge of PHP 5 and MySQL 5 along with some design and information management skills. Knowledge of Drupal 6, perl, and Java would be very beneficial, but are not required. Experience with high uptime/high-load database environments and tweaking LAMP systems for better web performance would also be useful. A strong interest in and knowledge about astronomy is preferred. This would be an ideal position for someone with a degree in astronomy (BS, MS, PhD) but with an interest in pursuing a nontraditional career path.

The AAVSO is a small, non-profit organization so flexibility, initiative, a sense of humor and the ability to self teach are big advantages. Located in Cambridge, MA. and entering its 100th year of service, the AAVSO provides a competitive salary, full health care, continuing education, flexible hours and other benefits in a relaxed work environment. The estimated start date for the position is Fall 2010, but is negotiable. Sorry, we cannot pay relocation costs.

Please send a cover letter and resume/C.V. to Aaron Price via e-mail at aaronp_at_aavso.org. Please, no telephone calls or recruiters.
