5. Academy Member was Female Trailblazer in Astronomy

Dr. Margaret Burbidge was the first woman to serve as director of the Royal Observatory, a recipient of the National Medal of Science, and a designer of instruments carried aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. She was also the first director of the University of California’s Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences.
