1. STATUS Editorial Staff Update

The CSWA is pleased to announce some changes in the STATUS editorial staff. Katy Garmany is stepping down from her role as Editor-in-chief and straight into the shoes of Associate Editor. Meanwhile, Nancy Morrison is stepping in the other direction and taking on the job of Editor-in-chief.
Thank you, Katy, for your years of service as Editor-in-chief to STATUS! And thank you, Nancy, for taking up the mantle! STATUS is in good hands.

We hosted (our first annual) Girls Do Hack at the Adler Planetarium this past Saturday... and it was awesome. Fifty Chicago Public School high school girls came to the planetarium to participate in a full day of STEM-tech activities, like mobile phone app coding, detecting planets around other stars, designing low-cost water filtration systems with 3D printers, creating their own planetarium shows using World Wide Telescope, and much more.

In last month’s ADVICE post on Workplace Bullying, I mentioned that there are many ways for a bully to bully. Here is an incomplete list of bullying tactics adapted from Wikipedia and modified for the astronomical community. Your bully may employ one of more of these tactics or he/she may have invented others. Unfortunately, there is no check list for workplace bullying in astronomy. You cannot study this list, check 5 or 10 items, and then link to recipe XYZ to solve the problem. Advice really does need to be tailored to the details of a specific situation.

While I was still working at Caltech earlier this year Renée Hlozek (pronounced "logic") --- Princeton astrophysicist, cosmology theorist and astrostatistics expert --- stopped through Pasadena to give a science talk. During her visit she gave me advice for mentoring women astronomy students and we also shared our thoughts on the underrepresentation of women in astrophysics, particularly at the faculty level.

Deadline: November 15, 2013
Awards will be announced on or about December 15, 2013
This award is established by the Planetary Science Institute in memory of Senior Scientist Betty Pierazzo to support and encourage graduate students to build international collaborations and relationships in planetary science. Two awards will be made each year, contingent upon there being meritorious applications.
The award will consist of a certificate and up to $2000US.

Deadline: April 1, 2014
The Weimer award is open to any female plasma scientist who received her Ph.D. within the ten-year period prior to April 1, 2014. Nominations are active for one selection cycle (three years). The award consists of $2,000 and funds for travel to the annual meeting where the award is to be presented. The recipient will be invited to give a talk at the Division’s annual meeting.
