I've gotten some good input via twitter re: doing such things but perhaps a discussion of how frequently people in the field, especially women find themselves doing it, at what point in their careers did people do it, and how they got around issues such isolation, journal paywalls, etc might be good.Erinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03720277043980046240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6374266320411149509.post-5333755864127756282012-03-23T11:54:16.828-04:002012-03-23T11:54:16.828-04:00Hi Jessica, great post, the situation you explaine...Hi Jessica, great post, the situation you explained is exactly what I have experienced this year. I got my PhD in astrophysics in Fall 2011, and have applied for more than 15 postdocs and several teaching jobs as well as consulting firms, no luck yet!Niktahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10866262532997804716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6374266320411149509.post-83907826373122898532012-03-23T11:45:07.071-04:002012-03-23T11:45:07.071-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Niktahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10866262532997804716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6374266320411149509.post-85163627671372649312012-03-22T15:25:33.501-04:002012-03-22T15:25:33.501-04:00Great post Jessica! I don't know if you're on the astro grads mailing list, but a lot of times we'll get emails about local teaching positions at community colleges (many part-time). One of the third years taught a lab in the South Bay at one this semester, and they wanted to hire him to teach lecture classes next year; if you can't find full-time positions now, that could be a good start.

It seems like a majority of the people I know who are getting real world jobs on any reasonable timescale are getting them through networking and not the traditional job application process (though I don't know how relevant this is to teaching). Finding your alma mater's alumni association contacts is a huge help, it seems, as is doing fun things that involve meeting lots of new people (I've gotten job offers while playing squash, and I'm not on the market for a few more years).

Good luck! And if you think of any ways in which our astro/physics grad community can be more organized in helping people with the job search, I'd be more than happy to help (we do have this, which can always be improved)Therese Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15450567821950742022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6374266320411149509.post-61785160119519039022012-03-22T14:16:02.410-04:002012-03-22T14:16:02.410-04:00Hi Jessica,
