I'll restate it, from despair.com, "Quitters never win and winners never quit, but those who never win and never quit are idiots." I actually think this is really relevant, although not just for women. For astronomers in general. You may be a persistent post-doc 10 years past your PhD, and when your funding runs out, you are going to be in big trouble. I say this as someone who left the field several years ago and am seeing people run into this. Not saying they won't get a job somewhere, somehow, but they will definitely be in a worse position financially, emotionally, and family-wise than if they had made a switch years earlier. <br /><br />Persistence taken to the extreme is folly. I hope women are smart enough to hit the sweet spot. They may get more of what they want out of life in other pursuits besides academic astronomy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
